BPO interview practice for freshers
A BPO hiring process usually has an HR round, an English test, and an operations round, which often includes a mock call for voice roles. Each company runs its own version, so check the invite.
Practise for all three by speaking. The English test and the mock call both judge how clearly you talk, not what you know.
What rounds should you expect?
| Round | What it checks | How to practise |
|---|---|---|
| HR round | Your communication, your reasons for the job, shifts and location | Answer the common questions below out loud |
| English test | Speaking and listening, often scored by a computer | Repeat sentences, retell short stories, answer in full sentences |
| Typing test | Speed and accuracy, mostly for chat and email roles | A daily typing test online |
| Operations round | How you handle a customer, often through a mock call | The mock call drill below |
Freshers are often hired in groups, so some of these rounds can happen on the same day.
How does the English test work?
Many call centres use the Versant test from Pearson, or a test like it. Pearson lists its English Speaking and Listening Test at 17 minutes, and it says the scores are produced by AI. Pearson's sections include reading sentences aloud, repeating sentences, short answers, building sentences, retelling a story and open questions.
Because a computer scores it, the test rewards clear pronunciation, a steady pace and complete sentences. It does not reward fancy words. Practise by reading a paragraph aloud every day and by retelling a short story in your own words after hearing it once.
Common HR round questions
- Tell me about yourself. Keep it to your studies, one strength and why you want this work.
- Why do you want to work in a BPO? Talk about the work itself, e.g., helping customers or learning a process.
- Are you comfortable with night shifts and rotational shifts? Answer honestly, because this decides your team.
- How would you handle an angry customer? Give the steps you would take, in order.
- Where do you see yourself in two years? Name a role you could grow into, e.g., team leader.
A mock call you can practise at home
In the operations round, the interviewer often plays a customer with a problem. Ask a friend to play the customer, or record both sides yourself. Practise this situation. A customer was charged twice for one order and wants a refund today.
- Greet the customer and give your name.
- Listen to the whole problem without interrupting.
- Say sorry for the trouble in one sentence.
- Repeat the problem back to check you understood it.
- Explain what you will do and how long it will take.
- If you cannot promise a refund today, say what you can do instead.
- Close the call politely and ask if there is anything else.
The interviewer is listening for calm, polite and clear. How you handle the customer counts for more than a perfect fix to the problem.
Practise the HR round with an AI interviewer
On Just One Interview, you can type a role such as customer support executive and the skills you want tested, and an AI interviewer asks you the questions out loud in English. You get a report with a score for each answer and a count of your filler words. It runs in the browser on your phone, and the free plan includes 20 minutes of practice a month.
