What OpenAI Dots can and cannot do for your job search
OpenAI launched dots on 29 September 2026. A dot is an AI agent inside ChatGPT that keeps working on your tasks between conversations, on a computer of its own in OpenAI's cloud.
In a job search, a dot can carry the admin, e.g., tracking every role you are going for. It costs at least $100 a month, and the interview itself stays with you.
What did OpenAI launch?
The launch came at DevDay, the yearly event OpenAI holds for developers in San Francisco. Each dot works for one person. You name it yourself, and its picture can be a character or a pet.
Behind the chat there is a whole machine. OpenAI gives every dot a cloud computer and a browser of its own. The dot links to the apps you pick through ChatGPT's plugins, which cover over 4,000 services. Over time it learns how you like things done. GPT-6 Astra, the most advanced model OpenAI offers, does the thinking.
What is new is that a dot does not wait for you. It carries on with your tasks between conversations and sends you a message when it needs a decision. When you are away, it reads your connected apps and looks for ways to help. OpenAI calls this proactive research, and the tools a dot uses for it can only read.
What can a dot take off your plate?
A job search is full of small tasks that repeat every week, and those suit a dot well. You could ask yours to:
- Keep a list of every role you are going for, with the date you sent your CV and the follow-up you promised.
- Read a job description and pick out the skills the employer mentions most.
- Watch your inbox for replies from recruiters and tell you which ones need an answer.
- Put interview slots in your calendar and remind you the evening before.
- Draft a thank-you note after an interview, for you to edit before it goes.
Each of these relies on features OpenAI lists for dots, e.g., scheduled reminders. How useful they are depends on how clearly you tell the dot what you want.
What should you keep for yourself?
Some parts of a job search need you, and a dot should stay out of them:
- The interview. The employer wants to hear how you think and speak for yourself.
- Messages to recruiters that you have not read. Set your dot to ask before it sends anything in your name.
- Forms that ask about your pay or your right to work. Check every answer yourself.
A recruiter reads every message from you as your own words, so treat anything your dot sends the same way.
What does a dot cost?
There is no free dot. Your first one comes with ChatGPT Pro, or with Business Premium, which is a plan for companies.
| ChatGPT plan | Price | Dot |
|---|---|---|
| Pro 100 | $100 a month | One dot included |
| Pro 200 | $200 a month | One dot included |
| Pro 500 | $500 a month | One dot included, with OpenAI's fastest speed |
| Business Premium | Company plan | Included |
| Free, Go or Plus | Cheaper plans | No dot |
ChatGPT's pricing page shows the price in your own currency. In the UAE, Pro starts at AED 385 a month.
That is a lot of money for the admin of a job search. Before you pay, write down what you would hand over each week. If the list is short, a calendar with reminders will do most of the same work for free.
If your employer gives you ChatGPT Business Premium, keep your job search off it. A work account belongs to your employer, and its admins set the rules for it.
Can you get a dot in India or the Gulf?
Yes, with Pro. OpenAI's help page lists the UK, Switzerland and the European Economic Area as the places where Pro users cannot get dots at launch. India and the UAE are not on that list, and the rollout reaches accounts over several days. You also have to be 18 or over.
Meta's Muse, the other big always-on AI agent, can so far be used only by people in the US and Canada. We compare the two in Muse vs OpenAI Dots.
How to set up a dot safely
- Create the dot on a computer. You cannot create one on a phone, but you can message it on your phone afterwards.
- Connect one account first, e.g., your calendar, and see what the dot does with it for a few days.
- In Custom Rules, set sending messages to Ask before taking action.
- Check what it did each evening in the Activity View of the desktop app.
- Connect your email last, and only if you are comfortable with the dot reading and remembering it.
Once connected, a dot keeps notes from your apps until you delete it. At launch, you cannot remove single memories. How OpenAI Dots work explains what it reads and keeps.
Practise the part a dot cannot do
A dot can gather notes for an interview, but on the day you have to speak. What helps most is answering real questions out loud and noticing where your answers run long. You can run a practice round on Just One Interview in your browser for free, and the report scores each answer and shows what to change.
