Can I give an interview in Hindi?
It depends entirely on the role and the employer. Many customer-facing, retail, field sales and support roles in India are interviewed in Hindi or another regional language, because that is the language the job is done in. Roles serving international customers usually need English.
The honest test is simple: which language will you actually work in?
When is Hindi fine?
When the work itself happens in Hindi. Retail floors, field sales, collections, logistics coordination, and domestic support desks are all commonly staffed and interviewed in the local language. An employer testing you in English for a role you will do entirely in Hindi is testing the wrong thing.
If you are not sure, ask the recruiter which language the interview will be in. It is a normal question, it is not a confession of weakness, and the answer tells you exactly how to prepare.
When is English genuinely required?
When your customers, colleagues or documentation are in English. Gulf roles are a clear example, because a team in Dubai or Doha is usually built from several nationalities and English is the shared working language. Technology, international sales, and most office roles at multinational companies are the same.
For those roles the interview being in English is part of the assessment, not an obstacle placed in front of it. Preparing in the language you will work in is the only useful preparation.
What about mixing Hindi and English?
In most Indian workplaces this is simply how people talk, and interviewers are used to it. Switching between languages mid-sentence rarely counts against you in a domestic role. What does count against you is losing the thread of your own answer while you translate.
Clarity beats vocabulary. A short answer in plain words lands better than a long one built around words you are reaching for.
How do you prepare when you are unsure?
- Ask the recruiter which language the interview will be in.
- Prepare your ninety second background in that language, out loud, not in your head.
- Prepare two concrete examples with a result you can state in one sentence.
- Practise saying your salary expectation and notice period. These are the answers people fumble under pressure.
- If you will work in English, practise in English even if it is uncomfortable. That discomfort is the point.

The thing worth remembering
Interviewers are listening for whether your answer addresses the question, whether you gave a real example, and whether your reasoning is clear. None of those require an elaborate vocabulary. Candidates lose far more often on vagueness than on grammar.
