How to pass an AI interview
To pass an AI interview, answer each question directly, give one real example per answer, and speak in full sentences for thirty seconds to a minute. The score measures whether you addressed the question, gave concrete evidence, and reasoned clearly. It does not measure your accent or vocabulary. One spoken practice run the night before is the best preparation.
The AI holds everyone to the same standard, so what works is predictable. This guide covers exactly what that standard is.
How do you pass an AI interview?
You pass it the same way you pass a good human interview: by giving clear, specific answers to the questions asked. The difference is that the AI scores every candidate against the same guide, so the habits that work do not change from one interviewer to the next.
If you do only one thing, do this. Answer the question that was asked, not the one you prepared for. If the question is about a deadline you missed, an answer about a deadline you hit does not count.
What will an AI interview ask?
The questions are written from the role. Expect a walkthrough of your relevant experience, one or two behavioural questions about a time something went wrong, a question about how you would approach a real task from the job, and a question about why this role.
Because the AI listens, it also asks follow-up questions about the details you mention. That is good news if your answers are true and bad news if they are inflated. The five questions guide gives an answer shape for each of the near-universal ones.
What does the score measure?
Each answer is scored against a guide built from the role. The guide asks whether you showed the skill the question was testing, with evidence from what you actually said.
The report the recruiter reads quotes your own words as that evidence. So the way to raise your score is to give the AI better evidence to quote. A short answer with one specific story does that. A long answer full of general claims does not.
The five habits that pass
| Habit | Why it scores |
|---|---|
| Lead with the answer, then give the example. | The scorer finds your point in the first sentence instead of hunting for it. |
| Say I, not we. | The interview is scoring what you did, and 'we' hides that. |
| One specific story per answer: situation, action, result. | Gives the guide concrete evidence to quote. |
| Finish your sentences. | Trailing off reads as an incomplete answer. |
| Ask for a repeat if you did not understand. | Costs nothing, and stops you answering the wrong question. |
What fails people?
Most low scores come from a handful of avoidable habits, and none of them are about talent. One-line answers give the AI nothing to score. Reading from a script sounds flat and falls apart on the first follow-up.
Vague claims such as 'I am a strong team player' score poorly because there is no evidence attached. Drifting off the question is the most common fault of all. The common mistakes guide has the fix for each.
How to pass an AI video interview
If your interview is recorded on video, the same rules hold, plus a few practical ones. Sit somewhere quiet with light on your face, look at the camera when you speak, and test your microphone before you start.
The recording is there so a person can check your answers later. Nobody is scoring your background or your clothes. The video practice guide covers framing, light and eye line.
AI interview tips if English is not your first language
You are not marked down for an accent. The AI transcribes and scores the content of your answers, so plain words said clearly do the job.
Short sentences help here. If you are searching for a word, pause rather than filling the gap with a long clause. A pause is not scored. A sentence that never ends is hard to score.
How do you prepare for an AI interview the night before?
- Re-read the job description and pick the two or three skills it leans on most.
- Prepare one true story for each skill, with a result you can say in one sentence.
- Do one full practice run out loud. Your spoken answer is always different from the one in your head.
- Read the report, fix the weakest answer, and stop. Sleep is part of the plan.
In Just One Interview, you type the role and the skills, paste the job description, and an AI interviewer runs the round out loud with follow-ups. The report shows an overall score, a score per question, the things to work on, and a stronger version of your own answer, so you know which answer to fix.
