Account executive interview questions, with answers

Questions by role · Updated 2026-10-26

Account executive interviews test whether you can build a pipeline, run a good discovery call, handle objections and close. Expect questions about your numbers and a role play where you sell something.

Know your last two years of quota and results by heart before you walk in.

Questions about your results

  • What was your quota last year, and what did you close? Give both numbers and the percentage.
  • Walk me through your pipeline right now. Stages, number of deals and how you keep it full.
  • Tell me about your biggest deal. Who was involved, how long it took, and what nearly stopped it.

Questions about how you sell

How do you find new accounts?A weekly routine with numbers: calls, emails, meetings booked

The role play

Many interviews ask you to sell their product or an everyday object. The interviewer is not judging the pitch. They are checking whether you ask questions first. Spend the first minute on questions: who they are, what they use now, what is not working. Then match one or two features to what they said, and ask for a next step.

If you are moving from a sales development role, talk about the meetings you booked and how many turned into deals. That is the closest proof you have.

Practise the round

On Just One Interview, you type the role and the skills you want tested, and an AI interviewer asks you the questions out loud. You get a report with a score for each answer and a count of your filler words. It runs in the browser on your phone, and the free plan includes 20 minutes of practice a month. Common questions

What do interviewers look for in an account executive?

A track record against quota, a clear sales process, good questions in discovery and calm objection handling.

How do I answer sell me this pen?

Ask questions first about how they use pens and what bothers them, then sell one benefit that answers it, then ask for the sale.

What if I missed my quota?

Say the number honestly, explain the reason in one sentence, and show what you changed and how the next quarter went.

What should I ask at the end of an AE interview?

Ask about average deal size, how quota is set, how many reps hit it last year and where leads come from.
