BPO team leader interview questions, with answers

Questions by role · Updated 2026-10-26

A BPO team leader interview checks four things: how you hit team targets, how you coach agents, how you handle escalations, and how you plan shifts. Expect questions that ask for numbers and real examples from the floor.

If you are moving up from agent, use examples where you already helped others or covered for a lead.

Targets and metrics

  • Which metrics did your team track, and how did you do against them? Name them, such as average handle time, quality score or customer satisfaction, with your numbers.
  • Your team misses its quality target two weeks in a row. What do you do first? Listen to calls before deciding, then find the one or two common errors.
  • How do you balance handle time and quality? Explain that fixing the issue on the first call usually brings both down over time.

Coaching agents

  • Tell me about an agent you helped improve. Say what was wrong, what you did each week and the change in their numbers.
  • How do you give feedback to someone who gets defensive? Start with a call recording, ask what they heard, agree one thing to change.
  • How do you handle an agent who is often late? Talk privately first, find the cause, then follow the attendance policy if it continues.

Escalations

  • A customer asks for a supervisor and is shouting. How do you take the call? Let them finish, summarise the problem, say what you can do and by when.
  • When do you escalate to a manager? When it needs a decision beyond your authority or affects many customers.

Shift planning

  • Two agents call in sick before a busy shift. What do you do? Check the call forecast, move breaks, ask for volunteers, and tell your manager early.
  • How do you share night shifts fairly? A rota everyone can see, rotated on a fixed pattern.

Bring two or three numbers you know by heart, such as your quality score or the improvement in an agent you coached. Team leader interviews reward specific numbers.

Common questions

What questions are asked in a BPO team leader interview?

Questions on team metrics, coaching agents, handling escalations and planning shifts, usually with a request for numbers and real examples.

How do I move from agent to team leader?

Show you already help others: training new joiners, covering for a lead, or keeping strong quality scores yourself.

What metrics should a BPO team leader know?

Average handle time, quality score, customer satisfaction, first call resolution and attendance, plus your own team's numbers.

How should I answer how would you handle an underperforming agent?

Listen to their calls, find the cause, agree one change, check weekly, and follow policy only if nothing improves.
