Critical thinking interview questions, with sample answers
Critical thinking questions test whether you check before you act. The interviewer wants to hear that you questioned an assumption, looked for evidence, weighed the options and were willing to change your mind.
Use a real example where your checking changed the outcome.
Common critical thinking questions
- Tell me about a time you questioned how something was done.
- Describe a decision you made with incomplete information.
- Tell me about a time you changed your mind after new facts came in.
- How do you check that information is correct before you use it?
- Describe a time you spotted a mistake others had missed.
What the interviewer is listening for
| Signal | What it sounds like |
|---|---|
| Questioning | I wasn't sure the numbers were right, so I checked the source. |
| Evidence | I compared last month's report with the system data. |
| Weighing options | We could refund now or investigate first. I chose to... |
| Openness | Once I saw the second report, I changed my plan. |
Two sample answers
Customer support: A customer said they had been charged twice. The system showed one payment, so the easy answer was no. I asked for the bank statement and saw two pending charges from a retry. I explained that one would drop off in three days and noted the retry issue for the team lead. The customer stayed calm, and two similar tickets that week were answered faster.
Fresher: In a college project, our survey showed most students wanted later library hours. I noticed most answers came from one hostel. We surveyed two more hostels before presenting, and the result was closer to even, so we proposed a trial instead of a change.
Mistakes to avoid
- Describing yourself as analytical without showing the analysis.
- Choosing an example where you were simply right and others were wrong.
- Forgetting the result of your checking.
