Problem solving interview questions, with answer shapes
Problem solving questions ask how you handled something that went wrong. The interviewer wants to hear how you think: how you found the cause, which options you weighed, what you chose and what happened.
Answer with one real example, in order, and end with the result and what you learned.
Common problem solving questions
- Tell me about a difficult problem you solved at work or in your studies.
- Describe a time something went wrong and you had to fix it fast.
- Tell me about a problem you could not solve. What did you do?
- How do you decide which problem to tackle first when there are several?
- Describe a time you found a better way to do a task.
A four step answer shape
- The problem: one or two sentences on what went wrong and why it mattered.
- The cause: how you found out what was really causing it.
- The choice: the options you had and why you picked one.
- The result: what changed, with a number if you have one, and what you would do again.
An example answer
In my last job at a phone store, customers kept coming back because their new phones would not receive messages. I checked the returns and saw it only happened when the old SIM card was moved across. I asked the manager if we could add a SIM check to our setup steps and wrote a short checklist. Over the next month the returns for that issue went from about ten a week to two.
Notice what makes it strong: a specific problem, how the cause was found, one clear action and a result with a number. It takes under a minute to say.
What makes an answer weak?
- Saying you are a natural problem solver without an example.
- Describing a team result without saying what you did.
- Skipping how you found the cause and jumping to the fix.
- Choosing a problem that was small or not really a problem.
Practise it out loud
