What is an AI bot interview?
An AI bot interview is a first round where software asks you the questions instead of a person. It can be a chat, a voice call or a video call. The bot records your answers and scores them, and a recruiter reads the results.
The bot does not hire you. It decides who the recruiter reads first.
What are the three kinds of bot interview?
| Kind | How it works | What to focus on |
|---|---|---|
| Chat bot | You type answers to questions on a website or messaging app | Full sentences, correct details, no copy paste |
| Voice bot | An AI voice asks questions on a call or in the browser | Clear speech, one example per answer |
| Video bot | An AI asks questions while your camera records | Good light, eye contact with the camera, calm pace |
Some bots ask fixed questions. Newer ones ask follow-up questions based on what you said, so a vague answer often gets a second question.
What does the bot score?
- Whether you answered the question that was asked.
- Whether you gave a real example with a result.
- Whether your answers match what the role needs, such as customer handling or targets.
- Basic facts, such as location, shifts and when you can start.
Who makes the decision?
In most companies a recruiter or hiring manager reads the bot's report and decides who moves on. The report usually has a score, a short reason for it and the transcript of what you said. That is why a clear, specific answer matters more than a long one.
How to do well
- Read the job description and pick two or three examples that fit it.
- Answer in this order: the situation, what you did, the result.
- Keep each answer to about a minute.
- Check your camera, microphone and connection ten minutes before.
- If the bot asks a follow-up, answer it directly rather than repeating your first answer.
Practise with a bot first
On Just One Interview, you type the role and the skills you want tested, and an AI interviewer asks you the questions out loud. You get a report with a score for each answer and a count of your filler words. It runs in the browser on your phone, and the free plan includes 20 minutes of practice a month.
